The True Meaning of Wealth: It's Not Just About Money
David Wiedmeyer

When you hear the word "wealth," do you think of Scrooge McDuck, the Monopoly man, Richie Rich, or maybe even the Kardashians? If so, we have some things to talk about.

Now, don't get me wrong, money is important. I am a financial planner, after all. But what if I told you that you can be wealthy without having millions of dollars? Would you believe me?

Before I jump into what wealth truly is, I need to ask you a favor. If there's anyone you think this message would resonate with or you just think they'd like it, please share our newsletter: HERE

Imagine this. You're lying there in your hospital bed, surrounded by loved ones. Everyone is somber. They know you are not much longer for this earth. Are you going to look around and discuss:

  • Buying Nvidia on the dip?
  • Your portfolio allocation?
  • Taxes?
  • The fees you paid for financial planning?
  • Your net worth?

Maybe, but I’m guessing the answer is no. The irony I have found is so many people are under the impression that they will! At least that is the way people act when I ask, "What is wealth?"

Why? I attribute a lot of it to society and consumerism in general. Social media amplifies it. Keeping up with the Joneses used to be a comparison across the street or next door. Now people see the "perfect" lives of strangers on Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram. Corporations know this and market to it.

The shame is, wealth is more than dollars and cents. That's why I launched this newsletter after all.

So, what is wealth? Wealth is the accumulation of three areas:

  1. You
  2. Relationships
  3. Money

This is what I call the "Wealth Trifecta." Each of these areas needs to be in balance to achieve "true wealth."

If you pay no attention to yourself and your health suffers, why have money? Are you really wealthy if you can’t participate in the fruits of your labor? Enjoy the beach? Time with your kids?

If you pay no attention to relationships and other people, why have money? Spending money on things is only so fulfilling. Are lonely dinners worth it?

If you have health and good relationships, would you trade it for money?

It will surprise you how quickly you can find enough (more on that topic in coming editions) and the benefits of the shift in mindset once you balance these areas.

In the coming weeks, I will break down each of the sections and provide tips and tricks for improving each. I have personally been on this journey and found so much benefit. I’ve lost 60 lbs by focusing on my physical and mental health. My relationship with my wife and daughters has vastly improved with the additional focus on family time and being present. My needs are met, and I am working on MY practice, not hitting numbers for some corporation and finding personal and professional fulfillment along the way.

I am not chasing the dollar. I am not keeping up with the lifestyle of Tim from 8th grade, who I friended on Facebook but haven't spoken to in 18 years and can't really remember but he seems nice. Instead, I focus on the controllable and being present. I focus on accumulating true wealth.

What about you? Do you feel wealthy? Drop me a line and let me know.

Oh, and share the newsletter!

But most importantly, have an amazing week.

David
